How to get to Kyoto's Gion-ji Temple, where moss and autumn leaves are beautiful [Maple Moss Temple]

Gion-ji Temple is located a little north of the central area of Arashiyama, Kyoto, at the foot of a mountain where many temples are located. The nearby roads are very narrow, and only one car can pass through at a time. There is no space to park your car.

There are no parking lots near Gion-ji Temple, so if you are coming by car, you will need to find a paid parking lot in the central area of Arashiyama and then walk from there.

However, please note that it can be difficult to find a parking space even in the center of Arashiyama during the cherry blossom season in spring and the autumn leaves in autumn. If possible, it is recommended to go by city bus or train.

We took a rickshaw from Arashiyama to get there.

This is the entrance to Gion-ji Temple. The gate has a very simple appearance, but from the temple grounds you can see the autumn leaves that are already starting to change color. The gate decorated with moss and maple leaves is very tasteful.

Moss on the thatched roof

The thatched roof of the Gionji Temple gate is covered with a thick layer of moss. The slightly decayed atmosphere gives a sense of the weight of the history that Gionji Temple has accumulated.

Gion-ji Temple Garden

How to get to Kyoto's Gion-ji Temple, where moss and autumn leaves are beautiful [Maple Moss Temple]

When you enter Gion-ji Temple, you will see a small but beautiful garden of autumn leaves and moss. We visited on November 20th.

Although it was late November, it was not yet cold enough, so the leaves had only turned about 50% of their color.

The maple leaves are not bright red, but the gradation from green to yellow-green, orange, and red is beautiful, and it is full of charm that captures the hearts of visitors.

Maple leaves rotting on moss

How to get to Kyoto's Gion-ji Temple, where moss and autumn leaves are beautiful [Maple Moss Temple]

It had just rained a little, and the moss wet with the rain and dew was sparkling and beautiful, captivating the viewer. In fact, Gion-ji Temple is also known as the Moss Temple. After the light rain, the moss shines brightly, and a vibrant green spreads across it.

The ground in the garden is covered with splendid moss, and the sight of dead maple leaves falling and rotting on the moss is so beautiful that anyone can't help but stare at it for a while.

Sunlight filtering through the autumn leaves

Also, when the sun is visible, the sunlight filtering through the gaps in the maple leaves onto the moss-covered ground is a magnificent sight.

Yes, Gio-ji Temple is a temple that shows us different beautiful aspects of nature, whether it's sunny or rainy.

To the hermitage at the back of Gion-ji Temple

How to get to Kyoto's Gion-ji Temple, where moss and autumn leaves are beautiful [Maple Moss Temple]

Next, we went to the hermitage at the back of the Gion-ji Temple grounds.

The wooden statues of the principal image Dainichi Nyorai, Kiyomori, Gion, Gion, Hahatoji, and Hotoke Gozen are enshrined here (photography of wooden statues is prohibited), but only the wooden statue of Taira no Kiyomori is placed hidden between the shoji screens.

This is very interesting as it nicely expresses the feminine feelings of Gion and Hotoke Gozen, who are associated with Gion-ji Temple. (At the end, there is a historical explanation about Gion-ji Temple, so if you're interested, please read it.)

Yoshino Window / Rainbow Window

How to get to Kyoto's Gion-ji Temple, where moss and autumn leaves are beautiful [Maple Moss Temple]

In the back room of this hermitage, there is a large shoji window called the "Yoshino Window."

This "Yoshino Window" is also called the "Rainbow Window" because the lattice of the window intersects with the bamboo grove outside, casting a colorful shadow.

In front of the Yoshino Window, there is a miniature garden-like cutout of a famous spot in Gion-ji Temple.

The connection between the Tale of the Heike and Gio-ji Temple

I would like to briefly introduce the connection between Gio-ji Temple and the Tale of the Heike.

This Gio-ji Temple was originally a nunnery where Gio, a Shirabyoshi (a type of Kabuki that originated in the late Heian to Kamakura period, and the courtesan who performs it), who was favored by Taira no Kiyomori, ended up after being chased out of his mansion due to his change of heart.

It is said that Gio-ji Temple is where she spent the rest of her life chanting Buddhist prayers together with her sister Gion, her mother Toji, and the young Shirabyoshi Hotoke Gozen, who would later join her and who was the reason Gio was abandoned by Taira no Kiyomori.

The summary of "Volume 1: Gion" from the Tale of the Heike (quoted from the official website of Gion-ji Temple) is shown below. Reading this will surely add a deeper meaning to your visit to Gion-ji Temple.

The Tale of the Heike - Volume 1 Gio Synopsis
At the time, the Heike clan was at its peak, and the country was in the hands of Taira no Kiyomori. At that time, there were two sisters, Gio and Gijyo, who were famous in the capital as masters of Shirabyoshi (a dancer who performed men's dances wearing a mizuhi). Her older sister, Gio, was favored by Kiyomori, so her younger sister, Gio, was also well-respected, and her mother, Toji, was also allowed to live in a fine house, and the family became wealthy and prosperous.Shirabyoshi in Kyoto were envious of Gio's good fortune, and some even added the character [Gi] to their names in honor of Gio.
After three years, another popular shirabyoshi appeared in Kyoto. She is from Kaga Province, is 16 years old, and her name is Hotoke. Then she visited Kiyomori and asked him to see her dance. However, Kiyomori said, [Prostitutes are invited to come, so what do you mean by self-recommendation? Moreover, it is not permissible to come to the place where Gio is. Get out now] and tried to kick her out. Then Gio said, [It's pitiful that you're leaving me so brusquely. As Shirabyoshi, I don't think it's someone else's problem. Wouldn't it be great if we could just meet face-to-face?] he interceded.Kiyomori called Hotoke gozen back [if that's what you say].
Hotoke gozen's imayo and mai were so wonderful that everyone who saw them was surprised.Kiyomori also quickly moved on to Hotoke Gozen and tried to keep Hotoke Gozen by his side.Hotoke gozen was surprised [I was about to be kicked out, but Gio gozen brought me back because of Gio gozen's intercession, so I feel embarrassed for Gio gozen if he calls me out. Please fire me immediately,] she told Kiyomori.Kiyomori then ordered, [If you're going to refrain because Gio is here, then I'll kick Gio out. Gio, leave now.] and kicked Gio out.
Gio had been prepared to be kicked out at some point, but he never expected to be kicked out so quickly. She wrote a tearful song on the Fusuma (sliding door) as a keepsake.
Whether it sprouts or dies, the grass in the field is the same, and it should grow in autumn.
Translation: Just as plants slough off their buds in spring, whether Hotoke Gozen is loved by Kiyomori and tries to prosper, or if I am thrown away, they are all just the same field grass - Shirabyoshi.Just as everything comes to an end in autumn, who will ever end without being disappointed by Kiyomori?
When Gio returned to our house, She collapsed and just cried. Eventually, the monthly gifts of rice and money were also stopped.
In the spring of the following year, Kiyomori sent a messenger to Gio and ordered her to come here once and comfort him by singing a dance to him because Hotoke gozen looks lonely.Persuaded by her mother, Toji, Gio went to Nishi-Hachijo in tears.
Gio's seat was placed far below her, and she held back her tears of frustration in her sleeve.Hotoke gozan felt so sorry when she saw this, but she was strongly stopped by Kiyomori and couldn't do anything.Gio did as Kiyomori said and sang her heart.
Buddha was once commonplace, and we will all become Buddhas in the end.
Translation: Buddha was once an ordinary person. We can finally attain enlightenment and become Buddhas. It is truly sad to separate yourself from the Buddha (Hotoke gozen) in this way, even though everyone has the nature to become a Buddha.
Gio left the mansion and tried to take her own life. Then her sister Gijyo will die with her. However, after being taught by her mother, Toji, she decided to leave the capital and become a nun.The three men built a modest hermitage (later Gio-ji Temple) in a mountain village deep in Saga and spent their time chanting nenbutsu, earnestly praying for the happiness of future generations.
Spring has passed, summer has passed, and the autumn winds have begun to blow. One night, someone was knocking on the bamboo screen door. When I went out to this mountain village at this late night, I was afraid of who it was, and there was Hotoke gozen.
Hotoke gozen said to Gio who was surprised. [Originally, he was about to be kicked out, but he was brought back through Gio gozen's intercession, but I was left alone and it was really painful. When I saw the brush strokes of Gio gozen's fusuma (sliding door), I thought, yes, that's right. I heard that Gio gozen has changed her appearance and is here now, so I definitely came here too.] Hotoke gozen, who had thrown off her clothes, had already become a nun. [Please forgive my sins.If it is permissible, let's recite the Nembutsu together and be born on the same lotus in the Pure Land of Bliss,] said Buddha Gozen in tears.Gio held back her tears and welcomed him, saying, [ I never knew you thought so much. Now, let's pray together.] From then on, the four of them secluded themselves in the same place, earnestly praying every morning and evening for rebirth, and it is said that they achieved their wish.
In addition, in the Chōkodo Chōkodō built by the Cloistered Emperor Goshirakawa, [Gio, Gijyo, Hotoke, and Toji's spirits] were written in the same place by the four of them.。

The first song that Gio wrote, [The grass in the field is the same whether it sprouts or withers, should grow in autumn] has a content that overlaps with the scene of the autumn leaves that are withering and falling outside right now. It makes me feel as if the garden of Gio-ji Temple is dramatically telling that sad story.
